There's something very spiritual about this piece of woods. A friend came by with paintings he had done of an adjacent path and an image of the National Cathederal with the elevated arches and similar lofty evocations. This is the second painting I have done in this location.

Walter and Waltons', retail fine furnishings, here in Onancock, is sporting a new coat of paint and the color is dazzling. Couple that color with the fine display of Crape Myrtle and it's a painters paradise. 14 x 18" oil on linen.

Burtons' Shore south view 30 x 36" oil on linen. This was my favorite painting spot a number of years ago and I returned here with my Fall Workshop group. Several small paintings were done here which led to this and the above piece which were worked-up in the studio. Initially the intent was to start an underpainting in the studio and finish the piece on location, but, in the interim a Nor'easter blew in and tore the place apart. Nature will heal herself but the scene will be different.

Barbara J. Hart had an opening reception on Friday the 13th, and what a way to start a show, preceeded by about 4 days of pouring rain and howling wind. Nevertheless there were hearty souls who ventured out to see the art. Here are several images of the show for you to enjoy. The show remains in the gallery until December 5th. We spent most of the day on Tuesday and all day Wednesday painting at Burtons Shore. The beach and waterway were magnificent with clear warm weather. The day started at 8:30 and we painted until almost 3:30. In all there were about 15 paintings created at this location, including a number that were done back on the marsh. On the chillier days of winter the painter turns to interior motivations. Here we have tulips from the gardenArt shop down the street holding still, with the brushes, all set against a large painting in the studio.

Several days this past winter the days were warm enough to venture out with a good size canvas to play with my paints and create this painting. This is the spot where, several years ago, a family of sea otters visited me while I worked. The greys and colors of near-bud-break create a very inviting atmosphere.

Sometimes the painter goes far afield in search of subject matter but other times the motive is just across the street. My neighbor has cultivated a very thoughtful garden and the combination of colors is captivating. It also makes a nice subject for painting. I especially enjoyed the mysterious darks and subtlety within.

Last year I painted this location and had numerous requests to purchase it. Over the winter I attempted to replicate the original but I really like being there while I paint. Recently the light and weather were in sync so I took my winters' labor to the sight and made another painting out of it. Of course the gravel in the background is not bluestone but yellow peastone, the boats from last year are different, and well, it's a new painting. If Mary from Princess Anne doesn't buy it, it will be up for grabs.

The Sterrets, in Belle Haven, VA., are famous for their daylilies, having over 1200 varieties. They bloom over a period of maybe 6 weeks and visiting over several days to make this painting I could observe as some faded and others came into their full glory.

The real impetus for this painting is still in the works. I spotted the work boats tied to the end of the pier on the far left side, out of the painting. The light was glowing on the boats and I just had to paint them. By the time I set-up the easel clouds had moved in and the motive was gone. Happily this scene caught my eye, an overcast day in Harborton, VA. Of course, by the time I finished it the roses had come and gone, what with waiting on subsequent overcast days, one of the disciplines of painting on location.

I've always been fascinated with woodland streams, possible harking back to my boyhood days frolicking in the woods of Maryland where I grew up. While I was working on this painting a pair of water snakes glided out of the rocks, he was smoking a cigarette, ah, nature. Skinks were scurrying over the bridge and by the time the commotion of my arrival settled down the raucous conversations of birds took over any thoughts of music going through my head. Glorious mother nature.

Sometimes the drama of dusk just begs to be captured and this scene is an attempt at just that. There are many nuances of tone and color and the object of this painting is to capture the inherent feeling of the scene, not necessarily every detail. The painting measures 30 x 36" and is mounted in an understated black frame. Call for details.
