This was a fun painting to make due to the extreme proportions and subject matter. It was the first painting where I used acrylic as an underpainting medium and developed quickly
This is the second painting I created with acrylic underpainting and oil over top. Using the acrylic lets me set the drawing very quickly and develop the darks. The nuanced finished layers are done in oil.
In May of 2007 on the east coast we had a blue moon. I found a spot to observe and stood in the field to get a real sense of the scene. This is what I came up with. 24 x 36" oil on linen.
Life as we know it sprung out of scenes like this. What can't be captured in paint are the many smells, sounds, breezes and subtle energy forces at work. Painted on location near Locustville VA. on the eastern shore of Virginia.
Left is "Orchids" 16 x 12" and right is "Lilies" 24 x 18"

And yet another Wachapreague impression.
Wachapreague sunrises are marvelous in their complexities. The tide influences wether or not you see the waterways and of course the cloud cover creates various moods. These large paintings come out of having spent so much time painting as the sun is rising. I have used the smaller paintings done on location to create larger, moodier pieces.
One morning in February while driving my son to interview at a college in Richmond I observed the full moon setting ever lower in the sky. When we reached the Chesapeake Bay bridge/tunnel it was just at the horizon. Luckily I had may camera and stood for a long while studying the mood. With the images and recollection this is what I came up with. SOLD
